One Step Backward

Well, we made it to Boston last night just fine, and "checked in" to the hospital this morning. The surgeon even put the line in and everything was a go for the first injection at 3pm. But Linda started getting nauseous again around noon and everyone's antennae went up. Dr. McDermott felt it was unusual for her to still be nauseous after all this time, so he wanted Linda to get an abdominal xray just to see if there might be some sort of blockage in her digestive system. The xray didn't happen till 3:30, and it came back inconclusive, so now they want to do a CT scan. That won't get read until tomorrow morning, so that means no IL-2 tonight. Worst part is, Linda has to drink that awful Barium solution. The bottle is more than she's had to drink all day today, but she's being a trooper about it, as always.

The blood tests also showed a very low hemoglobin level. It's 6, and it was 8 when she left the hospital last time, and normal is more like 12. Linda's always been anemic, but this was really low. They feel this may also explain her fatigue, and they plan to give her blood when we get back after the CT scan. It would be great if that helped.

On the plus side, Tony's here! He arrived safely around 1:30, and has been running errands and taking care of Mom. Running errands is more complicated than it sounds. The apartment that Tony, Andrea and I will be alternating evenings in is part of the hospital arrangements, and because they are sometimes used by bone marrow transplant patients, there is nothing, nothing in the apartment. No sheets, no pillows, no shower curtains, not even shower curtain rings. So Tony was on a scavenger hunt. Fortunately there's a Bed, Bath and Beyond up the road, so we're all set for the week now.

So now we hope for the best tomorrow. I'm not sure how I'm going to get thru the week myself-- I've only got one fingernail left. There's no way it's going to last the rest of the week.

We'll let you know what we find out tomorrow.

I couldn't find an e-mail address so I decided to leave this in the Comments section.

Mrs. Wimmers,

I doubt you remember me but you were so nice to me all four of my years at Badin. I am so sorry to hear that you have lung cancer. My grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer in February and had a radical mastectomy along with a round of chemo and radiation. She's still having a rough time but she is feeling better and will continue to, God willing. I wish you the best of luck in your treatment and you will be in my family's prayers. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask. My e-mail address is isaacsgs@gendebate.com.

You can do it!!! If you had to deal with pains in the rear like me for three years at Badin and still keep your sanity then you can kick cancer's butt like the terminator!!! You were always one of my favorites there!! God bless and you will be in my prayers. I'll keep checking in to see your PROGRESS (cause you will beat this thing)!!!
Best Thoughts,

Linda, Jim

Hang in there. Our thoughts are with you.
Jim, We also miss you on the golf course. Although you weren't there to kick my butt (and Pat's), Kenny and Mike have done a good job so far in the past few weeks. I'll send you some Thai luck because it doesn't work any more on the golf course. May be it will work for you and Linda.
By the way, Tom Andrews always come up with a good comment, doesn't he?

Mrs. Wimmers,

I also could not find an email address so I will write you on here...

I am not sure if you remember me either, it is Blaire Karg. I can honestly say you were my favorite teacher at Badin and you helped make my Kairos experience one to remember my senior year. I will never forget the talks we used to have before homeroom :). There is one particular incident that I will never forget about you and it made such an impact on me. I remember my locker was by your class room and one morning I was crying at my locker... you flagged me into your room. I was having problems with my dad (among other things) and I was overwhelmed and crying. I came into your classroom and you sat me down face to face and just listened to me (that really ment more then you know). You spent you homeroom break reassuring me and telling me that everything would be ok. From that moment on I looked at you not only as a teacher but also a dear friend. I know this is a small instance but it really had a large effect on me. You are in my thoughts and prayers and I truely hope everything is going ok. Please email me sometime if you can my address is blaire_karg@mail.msj.edu. Sorry I took up so much space on your wall!!

Love always,
Blaire Karg class of 04

Mrs. Wimmers,
Not sure if you remember me since I didnt have class with you, but I graduated from BHS in '01. And you did have my little sister Andrea Zettler in class :) Andrea showed me this blog and I wanted to let you know if you need anything Im close by. I live in Boston now and Im a nurse....I work at Children's hopsital in the ICU and used to work at Brigham and Women's/ Dana Farber Cancer. (I'm assuming that is where you are in Boston or possibly Mass General) When working at Brigham, I worked in Thoracic surgery, so I also know most of the lung doctors and surgeons in the Boston area. PLEASE PLEASE let me know if you or your kids need anything, need to know where anything is, or need things for the apartment. Im live about 5 minutes from the hospital and Im there about 3-4 times/week. Best of luck with your treatment...I know you're in good hands! My email is nzettler@gmail.com and phone is 513-324-0685
Sincerely, Natalie (Zettler) Leisinger

You can do it!!! I know this seems like millions of set backs but for every step forward there might be a few baby steps back. I'll keep praying and if you need anything (if Jim, Tony and Andrea need anything...I would send my finger nails but I don't think they'd work as well) let me know I'll get it there as fast as I can from Nashville. Love you lots!!!! Love Sami

Oh my, aren't Badin kids THE BEST!!!! Do you think it has anything to do with having THE BEST teachers??? I do!

Sounds like Dirk and Jim would make quite a pair with the fingernail thing. I'm assuming it's because he's biting them, not painting them. Oh, so maybe the pictures of your toes were really Jim's incognito! That's kind of fun to think about! (Sorry Jim--I don't really know you well, but figured you must have a good sense of humor to have put up with all of us Badin folks for these many years!)

Keep hangin' in there girl! I'm ashamed to say I'm not as up on my Bible versus as these recent grads are (I went to BHS in the 80s remember?) so here goes:

"You can't always control the wind, but you can control your sails." ~ Anthony Robbins

Love ya!
Kelli
